The reserve's location in the Don Valley attracts many migrant birds, particularly warblers and, inevitably, there have been some rarities among the 150 plus species recorded, such as Spotted Crake, and Barred Warbler.
But of greater importance is the value of the reserve and adjoining woodlands as a breeding area for approximately 60 species of birds, including several which are uncommon.
